There are times when I have tried to imagine what it would be like if I never knew something existed or what it would feel like looking at a book, being completely void of english knowlege; kind of like looking at a book in german perhaps.
Same with other things; trying to look into the mirror and refusing to trigger the memory of what or who it is.
You might think it's crazy and impossible. But it isn't. It is, however, fairly difficult. I am not sure if 'focus' is the right word but you would have to try to forget or empty your mind out. When it happens though I only have a couple seconds before it comes back but within that time I can forget everything and view it as thought it were new.
I am unsure whether it is an ability to be proud of or fearful of. I've emptied my memory temporarily for a number of things. I looked at a person and forgot what a person looked like, the same with my face, out of curiousity on how maybe an alien would perceive a human. It was pretty scarey actually, usually that is what happens, which might be why it doesn't last very long.
Reading can last longer because there is less fear involved. I have looked at a book, forgotten how to read, and looked at the words for almost half a minute before understanding that the lines formed letters and letters into words that had meaning. I was conciously forgetting but being unable to read was real.
I notice that there is usually a wall that once you get over you don't need to apply effort to forget for at least a couple seconds.
Once, in a particularly long episode [enough time for me to talk] I asked somebody, my sister I think, what the object was. I realized it a moment later though before she questioned seeming stupidity. That particular time I had done it randomly because some times are easier than others. I can realize when there is a good state to do it in, usually a state void of other strong interactions from the object [aka, you can't forget the person you're currently talking to] and also when there is nothing pressing or important on your mind.
I haven't tried it with anything non-visual yet but it probably can be done. I bet it could make music more intersting. If anyone can do it, I would suggest it because it is a very unique experience. Hopefully this isn't some ominous sign of a potential alheizmers in the future... >_>
